GARNI

GARNI

The pagan temple of Garni of I century BC is one of the most ancient and unique attractions of Armenia,

located in the village of the same name in Kotayk region, Armenia. It is the most famous monument of paganism and hellenism in Armenia, built by king Tiridates I (66-88 years.). The temple is dedicated to the god of sun Mitra. And this is evidenced by the greek inscriptions discovered on the mosaics. The temple is built of finely-finished basalt blocks, surrounded by columns. The skillful carving on the basalt are the evidence of the Armenian architects’ mastery.

Over many years, Garni temple was the official summer residence of the kings. Later, the temple remained safe despite the adoption of Christianity in Armenia in 301. As a result of a strong earthquake in 1679 the temple was almost completely destroyed, it was rebuilt in 1966-1976. At present, it is possible to see the remains of a fortress and royal palace with the Hellenistic mosaics, as well as the bath of III century.

The excursions to the pagan temple of Garni will long remain one of the brightest and unforgettable impressions during the whole trip.
